Earth Overshoot Day, 30 July

Earth Overshoot Day marks the point in the year when humanity’s demand on Nature exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that same year.

This year, that date is today: 30 July.

But this isn’t simply about each of us consuming less and recycling more (although that is only a good thing). It’s about really looking at the systems we live in, questioning what no longer serves and creating a world that understands the importance of reciprocity. A world that recognises ecological restoration and social restoration are inseparable. That we cannot treat Nature as an endless resource. And that our wellbeing depends on healthy, living ecosystems. Not the other way around.

This day isn’t about individual failure. It’s about how our economies, policies and institutions value the living world. Shifting that takes collective action, bold leadership and a willingness to challenge systems that continue to prioritise extraction over restoration.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of challenges this vast. But that’s why days like today matter. They remind us to push for change, to question the systems we’ve come to accept, what they’re costing us, and who they truly serve.

And today, those systems are no longer serving either people or planet.
