TRUST-BASED PHILANTHROPY

We use a Trust-based funding model, drawing from the body of work around Trust-based Philanthropy. It champions a more equitable and empowering approach, fostering genuine relationships grounded in mutual trust, transparency, and collaboration.

WHAT IS TRUST-BASED PHILANTHROPY?

Trust-based philanthropy is ‘An approach to funding that addresses the inherent power imbalances between funders, nonprofits, and the communities they serve.’  - Trust-Based Philanthropy Project. Trust-based philanthropy is becoming increasingly popular among donors and funders.

KEY OUTCOMES:

01

Addressing Power Imbalances.

Power imbalances are a natural aspect of funding relationships. By utilising a trust-based funding model, TreeSisters recognises that organisations, communities, or those directly involved in project delivery are most capable of identifying their needs and priorities. Instead of imposing our agendas, we are committed to listening and offering adaptable funding that best supports the effective and sustainable care of landscapes and communities. This approach not only empowers but also enables donors to maximise the impact of their contributions.

02

Building Trusting Relationships.

This approach relies on open, honest relationships to navigate the complexities of the work we are undertaking together. Collaborating as partners allows us to listen to the stories and insights significant to specific regions, peoples and projects. This will enable us to establish clear and meaningful joint objectives, assess progress, and make adjustments as necessary. This high transparency and collaboration fosters trust and bolsters the relationship over time.

03

Overcoming systemic barriers.

In this trust-based approach, we also acknowledge the systemic barriers that beneficiaries encounter. Funding partners can offer assistance beyond financial support by recognising and tackling these barriers. This could include providing resources for capacity building, advocacy, or other initiatives aimed at helping our partners feel supported, effective, and better connected and ensuring quality forest and land restoration in the long term.

04

Finding new and inspiring pathways.

By fostering relationships grounded in trust and collaboration, we can support our partners and projects to reach their objectives and generate a positive influence within their communities and environments. With the flexibility and support enabled by this funding approach, we can customise our measures of success while project partners can undertake their work in the most effective way possible. A trust-based philanthropic model is a more equitable, sustainable, and effective environment for all parties involved.

WHY DO WE USE A TRUST-BASED PHILANTHROPY MODEL?

TreeSisiters is rooted in ethics, and we strive to rebalance power dynamics and support the rights of nature. Unlike conventional funding , which often imposes stringent requirements and restrictions on beneficiaries, trust-based funding champions a more equitable and empowering approach, fostering genuine relationships grounded in mutual trust, transparency, and collaboration.
